I wrote this poem while restoring my son's treasured Medadolon shark tooth, which I found in the ashes of our former home. It relates the restoration of this fossil to the restoration and healing we experienced after the fire through God's love being shown to us by friends and family. Enjoy REVIEW and SHARE!
The Fossil and the Fire
There, in a heap of ashes
Which once was called our home
Rests a solitary shark tooth fossil
Had it survived the fire alone?
Much like the family of its owner
The fossil had come through this tragedy
But not without some battle scars
Even being broken into three
Our family washed and rinsed the fragile tooth
With lots of tender loving care
Which was just the same thing we had needed
To overcome the feelings of despair
Then we soaked it in a special primer
Which helped to strengthen up its core
As the answered prayers of friends and family
Had done for us just days before
We bonded the pieces back together
With a very special glue
Not nearly as special, however
As the bond of love our family knew
A shiny layer of acrylic
Was finally applied
To make the shark tooth look brand new
And cover up the scars inside
The funny thing about the scars
Is that those are now the special spots
Filled with more love from God above
Than our family could have ever thought
So Lord we thank you for keeping safe
The most valued things in the house that day
Father, Mother, Brother, Sister
And our precious Grandma too
And Lord, we thank you also
For our beautiful shark tooth fossil.
